A day at The Highland Games is a must for any visitor wishing to experience the true flavour of Scotland. Highland Games are held from the end of May to the middle of September every year, attracting crowds from several hundred to over ten thousand at some of the larger Games.

Perhaps the best known feature in the Games is the heavyweight event Tossing the Caber, however there is far more to a day at the Games than this. The traditional events are Heavyweight Events including Throwing the Hammer, Putting the Shot, 56lb Weight over the Bar and Tossing the Caber. Then there are Highland Dancing Competitions, Solo Piping, Pipe Bands, Tug O' War and Light Field Events. In addition most Games have keenly contested Athletic and Cycling events, many which operate a handicap system. There are usually events held for Adults and Children. Road Races and Hill Races attract a lot of support and enthusiasm from the crowds, particularly for the hardy athletes who compete in both! Most Games have tea tents, side tents selling Scottish produce, amusements for children, refreshments and a beer tent. Quite often you'll find more light hearted competitions taking place such as a Haggis Eating Contest! You see a splendid array of different tartans in the kilts worn by competitors, officials, pipers and spectators alike. Games are taking place all over Scotland throughout the season. Whatever type of walking you enjoy, from a short stroll with the kids to a multi-day trek through remote wilderness areas, Scotland offers many superb locations. There is always plenty of wildlife to see, with specialties like red squirrels, otters and golden eagles in different habitats. For those who enjoy moderate walking, there are many way marked paths and short trails. You can stroll beside lochs and rivers, through woodlands or along cliffs to sandy bays. In some areas canal towpaths and disused railways also provide well-defined routes through peaceful countryside. Many walks visit castles, battlefields, stones circles or other historical and archaeological sites, and they often finish at a welcoming tearoom or inn. On our doorstep at the Old Mill at Brodie we have Brodie Castle whose grounds offer pleasant woodland walks, and just a few miles away the Culbin Forrest has way marked trails of varying distances. For more information on walking in the Grampian and Highland regions visit www.walkingwild.com .We can arrange for Mountain Bike Hire upon request.
